马蹄银是银锭的一种。即“元宝”。形如马蹄，故名。流通中实际使用的白银，最基本的形式是约50两重的“元宝”。从明代以来，整个银锭若马蹄形，所以又称马蹄银。
元宝由贵重的黄金或白银制成，一般白银居多，黄金稀见。据古籍所载，古者金银皆有定式，必铸成一定形状，而后用之。白银的铸造形式主要有棒形、扁平形、圆饼形，马蹄形或钱状、笏状等。隋唐以前把这些银的秤量货币称为钣(版)、笏、饼、钱、铤或锭。两宋通称锭，元代称银元宝，而以重五十两为一锭。

此银锭内平面阴刻铭文，崇祯十一年六月日，平阳路微征课税，所银五十两。周围有边缘凸起，形似蝴蝶结，其表面银光十足，底光如何，在自然光线为漫反射光泽，包浆老旧，整体表现十分开门，字迹鏨刻痕迹十分明显。
氧化蜂窝孔：此银锭底部有明显的氧化蜂窝孔，呈现大小不一的凹痕，这是由于铜币是由不同金属合金制成，其中的锡元素在极低的温度下会变成粉末，这就造成了与银锭中的银元素渐渐产生了分离，也就有了这枚氧化蜂窝孔的现象，不过锡要在零下13.2摄氏度，才会产生反应，有了这些痕迹无疑是开门的老银锭，不用怀疑真假，目前还无法仿制这大小不一的蜂窝孔。
鸦片战争后，外国洋银（见银元）大量流入和自铸银元流行，并没有根本改变或取代银两制度的地位。混杂的货币制度，在对外贸易的金融调度上和在与英镑比价的变化上，都符合外国资本的需要。1934年宣布废两改元后，银两不再使用。
